Applications will be due on December 15, 2019, with late applications considered on a space-available basis. See the "Apply" page for details about how to apply.

Eligibility

The Piney Wood Residency Program is the only residency dedicated to supporting acoustic musicians and singer-songwriters in the Americana roots music traditions, including country, folk, bluegrass, blues, R&B and gospel music. Candidates may be solo artists or ensembles at any stage of professional development, for whom a residency would have a significant impact on their careers or their growth as an artist.

We encourage and welcome the participation of musicians from all backgrounds and do not discriminate with regard to age, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, marital status or nation of origin in our admission policies.

What the program provides

The goal of the program is to give you a secluded, peaceful setting in which to nurture your own creative process and develop as an artist. To that end, we offer the following:

  • An open program. Aside from the common meal times and late-night quiet hours, you have the freedom to structure your time in whatever way will most enhance your musical and personal growth. You may want to work on new songs, learn a new picking technique, dig into a new musical style or artist, expand your repertoire, or polish a set for an upcoming recording or gig – whatever you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t had the focused time to get to.

  • A beautiful, inspiring location. The residency takes place on Trillium Woods Farm – a serene 55-acre conservation land trust that is covered with beautiful forests, gardens, streams, orchards and trails in the shadow of the Olympic National Park in Washington State.

  • Comfortable accommodations. Residents stay in nine charming rustic cabins and country cottages spread out across the property. Maximum occupancy on the farm is 20 people. Each dwelling is equipped with a kitchen or kitchenette and a private bathroom. Linens, towels, and basic toiletries are included. All of the lodgings provide views of peaceful scenery and ensure a relaxing experience.

  • Healthy, home-cooked meals. Lunches and dinners, prepared by a professional chef, are provided each day. Snacks and beverages will also be available in the afternoons.

  • Wi-fi internet access is available in one cabin that serves as a common area. There is no internet access elsewhere on the farm.

  • Researsal space. In addition to the cabins, dedicated spaces for rehearsal are available and scheduled so that each artist/group has ample time to play each day.

  • A great performance venue. The property is also the site of an amazing concert venue with great natural acoustics, where the residents put on a final performance at the end of the residency.

  • Collaboration. Residents will have the opportunity to collaborate and write with other musicians at nightly jam sessions in the Barn.

  • Nearby attractions. All work and no play...If you want to spend a day before or after the residency taking in the sights, or take an afternoon off to go hiking or shopping, the artsy seaport of Port Townsend and the wild majesty of the Olympic National Park are both within easy driving distance.

What the artist provides
  • Artists arrange for their own travel to and from the residency.

  • There is a $1200 fee per person to cover food and accommodations. Those who are willing to share accommodations (with someone not in their group) may be eligible for 10% discount. There is also a nonrefundable $10 application fee.

What's not allowed
  • Pets – there are two cats, several horses, and assorted wild creatures on the property.

  • Spouses or significant others, except for short visits.

  • TV (if you want to play DVDs on your laptop or computer, no problem, just keep the noise down or wear headphones please).

  • Loud music (except in the barn and rehearsal rooms). Acoustic music elsewhere is fine between 9am and 11pm.

  • Smoking is not allowed except in one designated smoking area near the rehearsal sites, which has a recepticle for butts. For fire and health reasons, smoking is not allowed in the cabins or anywhere else on the property.

  • Alterations to cabins (if you want to move furniture around, speak to us first).

  • Damage to property.

  • Rude behavior.
